Kellie's Castle was meant to be a home away from home for Scottish Planter, William Kellie Smith which is perched on top of a hill in what used to be a rubber estate. Smith brought in 70 craftsmen from Madras India to build the castle with Scottish, Moorish and Indian influence. The bricks and marble were imported from India, too. Included in the plan for the 6 storey tower was Malaya's first elevator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining. It is located near Batu Gajah, and is about 20 minutes' drive from Ipoh, Perak.
Construction of this unique castle began in 1915. However, it came to an abrupt halt with Kellie's sudden death in 1926. The solitary castle, looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of mystery.
Efforts have been made by the Perak State Government to rescue this magnificent structure from the encroaching foliage. Besides being haunted, the castle is believed to have hidden rooms and secret underground tunnels. The road that leads to Kellie's Castle follows the contours of the land in a dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the mystery and romance of the place.
With a beautiful majestic exterior, newly landscaped garden/ greenery, interesting interior full of secret doors and rich history, it is a great location for wedding photography. The whole place is like a maze. The bricks walls give it a rustic and mysterious feel. With the right angle, the photographer can produce a stunning image of the historic architecture.

The castle itself is well kept and the signs are informative. documenting the history as well as documenting various parts of the building. One of the rooms (living room) was also recreated with furniture to let visitors see what the "castle" could be like in its heydays. The castle is very interesting as it seems to be full of secret doors. The whole place is like a maze. One could easily get lost on it. The most interesting place...to me...is the wine cellar. Kellie's Castle combines Western and Oriental styles in eye-catching architecture at a quite special place. The exteriors of the castle (even the ruined part) are majestic. All the greenery surrounding the place along with the rivulet make it even more beautiful, and be sure to click a lot of pictures, the castle serves as a stunning backdrop! | |
http://www.nst.com.my/life-times/live/garden-makeover-for-kellie-s-castle-1.304925 Jun 2013 I HAVE heard many haunted stories about Kellie's Castle in Batu Gajah, Perak. Under the 10th Malaysian Plan, the Tourism Ministry allocated RM5 million for upgrading the place. Architects, historians and experts were consulted before the makeover. Early this month, I braved myself to visit Kellie's Castle to view its newly landscaped garden. Today, Kellie's Castle looks quite majestic and enchanting. New additions include stone-paved walkways, a mini theatre, souvenir shops, food stalls, public toilets and ample parking lots. The castle has awakened from its century-old slumber. Kellies Castle is a great location for photo shoots and wedding or modelling photography. |
